Achievements

Several projects have recently taken place on three sites within the Ulverscroft Valley.

Poultney Farm

  • Hedgerow planting to link up woodland areas
  • Removal of invasive non-native species – Himalayan balsam and laurel
  • Pond restoration
  • Thinning of holly within the woodland
  • Planting new woodland areas
  • Fields have acted as donor sites providing green hay for grassland restoration on neighbouring land
  • Letting hedgerows spread naturally into fields
  • Retain standing and fallen deadwood
  • Full habitat survey of landholding with suggestions on how to manage the land further for wildlife
  • Visits from the Loughborough Naturalists' Club, Leics & Rutland Bat Group, NatureSpot

Sandhills Lodge

  • Pond creation
  • Dredging ditches to reduce dominance of sedges on the wet grassland
  • Scything of tall vegetation and removal of scrub growing in the fen areas
  • Green hay spreading on a meadow to increase species diversity
  • Retain standing and fallen deadwood​
  • Protecting natural features in the River Lin - meanders and gravel beds
  • Full habitat survey of landholding with suggestions on how to manage the land further for wildlife
  • Visits from the Loughborough Naturalists' Club and the Leics & Rutland Bat Group

Benscliffe House

  • Creation of three ponds within a meadow
  • Green hay spreading on a meadow to improve species diversity
  • Removal of old tree guards
  • Restoration of dry stone walls
  • Planting of in-field trees to create a parkland landscape
  • Planting a new hedgerow to link woodlands
  • Full habitat survey of landholding with suggestions on how to manage the land further for wildlife
  • Visits from the Leics & Rutland Bat Group and Mammal Group

Helping wildlife on your land

You don’t need to create new habitats to support wildlife. Many species rely on features that already exist.

Simple actions can include:

  • Managing hedgerows for structure and continuity
  • Retaining mature and veteran trees
  • Protecting ponds, streams and wet ground
  • Allowing field margins or rough grass where appropriate
  • Retain standing and grounded dead wood
  • Graze fields sensitively through adjusting stock numbers
  • Allow hedgerows to spread into adjacent fields

The Corridor Club helps landowners identify what will have the greatest benefit, based on local species and landscape context.
